Virgin Galactic: VSS Unity
Virgin Galactic’s second SpaceShipTwo, the VSS Unity, performed its first rocket-powered test flight over California’s Mojave Desert on April 5, 2018. It was able to reach Mach 3 speeds during this flight, paving the way for future space tourism.
Imperx ruggedized CCD cameras were able to capture a vast array of remarkable aerial images while monitoring the structural & separation dynamics, along with the plume & propulsion uniformity of the exterior engines.

- Shock/vibration Performance: >1000G/100G.
- MTBF of > 660,000 hours @ 40˚C (Telcordia SR-332)

Structural Dynamics
Imperx Bobcat cameras handled the high-frequency frame rates to capture hull and wing flexing during the high-stress supersonic ascent and atmospheric re-entry phases.
Separation Dynamics
They tracked the exact physical clearance and release metrics when the VSS Unity separated from the VMS Eve Mothership.
Plume & Propulsion Uniformity
They monitored the hybrid rocket motor ignition, burn duration, and exhaust plume shape to measure the engine efficiency and safety.

Structural & Environmental Imagery
Imperx cameras were place across the fuselage tot analyze flight mechanics, capturing high-altitude views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Southern California coastline from the ship’s exterior vantage points.
Acontrast Management
The sensors utilized custom automated exposure features to instantly adapt to the harsh contrast between the bright Mojave desert to the deep black of space.
